Shock wave therapy is safe and effective for the treatment of refractory lateral epicondylitis, according to a report in the May-June issue of the American Journal of Sports Medicine. “The results of both nonoperative and surgical treatments for lateral epicondylitis of the elbow have been inconsistent,” write Ching-Jen Wang, MD, and Han-Shiang Chen, MD, from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
“Shock wave therapy has been shown to have a favorable short-term effect in treating this condition.” The authors gave shock wave therapy to 43 patients with lateral epicondylitis of the elbow, and they also treated six patients with a sham procedure as a control group. Shock wave therapy consisted of 1,000 impulses at 14 kV to the affected elbow.
Using a 100-point scoring system to evaluate pain, function, strength, and elbow range of motion, 27 elbows receiving shock wave therapy (61.4%) were free of complaints at one- to two-year follow-up, 13 elbows (29.5%) were significantly better, three elbows (6.8%) were slightly better, and one elbow (2.3%) was unchanged.
