Postmenopausal Women Reduce Risk Of Vertebral Fractures With Back Strengthening Exercises

Back strengthening exercises in postmenopausal women have a long term effect on reducing vertebral fractures, say researchers.

This study found the relative risk for compression fracture was 2.7 times less in 27 postmenopausal women who performed progressive, resistive back-strengthening exercises for two years compared with 23 control subjects.

The long-term protective results of stronger back muscles on the spine in the 50 healthy white women, aged 58-75 years, were followed-up by specialists from the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, in the United States, and Akita University School of Medicine, Japan eight years after the randomised trial.

All subjects were tested at baseline and at two and 10 years for bone mineral density, back extensor strength, level of physical activity and biochemical marker values. In the back exercise group (BE), the mean back extensor strength (BES) was 39.4 kg at baseline, 66.8 kg after two years of prescribed exercises and 32.9 kg eight years after ending the exercises.
