Advanced schistosomiasis japonica reduces physical fitness and working capacity even after clinical cure has been attained.
Researchers in the People’s Republic of China assessed the impact of the disease on 48 men and women, aged 40-70 years, from endemic areas who had no other serious chronic diseases.
They were then compared with 56 healthy people matched by age, sex, lifestyle, socio-economic status and environment from a non-endemic area as controls. The investigations included a questionnaire and anthropometric and haemoglobin level measurements. Liver impairment was measured by ultrasonography and physical fitness by the Step test.
