Healthcare Providers Need to Encourage Older Adults to Exercise

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) May 16 –

Federal health officials at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta are urging healthcare professionals to promote physical activity and its health benefits among the older set.

Their campaign is based on an analysis of data from the 1998 National Health Interview Survey of 6154 US adults 50 years of age or older.

Only 52% of respondents reported being asked about their level of physical activity or exercise during a medical checkup in the previous year, according to a report in the May 17th issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR).

This finding follows a 1999 report showing that <50% of older adults reported being asked about exercise by their healthcare provider, the CDC notes.
