Placement of an intra-articular pain catheter for delivery of bupivacaine is a very effective method of controlling postoperative pain following arthroscopic adhesive capsulitis release.
The method essentially eliminates postoperative pain, allowing improved results with range of motion exercises, according to investigators from the Shoulder and Elbow Service of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Washington School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, United States.
Twenty patients who underwent 23 arthroscopic releases of adhesive capsulitis received an intra-articular catheter. The catheter was placed into the glenohumeral joint under direct arthroscopic visualization. Injections with 10 milliliters of 0.5% bupivacaine were given as needed every six hours postoperatively. Patients were followed up for an average of 22.4 months.
