NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 19 – in responders, long-term monotherapy with adalimumab, the first fully humanized monoclonal antibody against tumor necrosis factor (TNF )-alpha, has a beneficial effect on radiological outcome in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). That is according to results of a study in the April Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
In comments to Reuters Health, team leader Dr. Alfons A. den Broeder noted that several clinical studies in press indicate that adalimumab safely and effectively treats RA-associated joint pain and swelling. "However, no data are present on the effects of this agent on the long-term complications of RA, the most important being damaging of bone and cartilage, mostly of the joints," he said.
