Surgical fractional lengthening of the iliopsoas tendon at the musculotendinous junction is a safe and effective treatment for otherwise unresponsive snapping of the iliopsoas tendon in adolescents.
Nine adolescent patients (11 hips) with persistent and painful snapping at the hip underwent the fractional lengthening procedure, report investigators from the Washington University School of Medicine and Shriners Hospitals for Children in St Louis, Missouri, United States. The patients, average age 15 years, had been experiencing audible snapping with localized pain in the anterior part of the groin for an average of 2.3 years. Eight out of nine patients had been involved in competitive athletics before the onset of symptoms.
Diagnoses were made based on physical examination and patient history. Presence of an osseous intra-articular loose body was ruled out using plain radiographs.
