Coronary Heart Disease Risk in Women Lowers With Increased Fish Consumption

04/10/2002
By Elda Hauschildt

Women who consume more fish and omega-3 fatty acids regularly have a lower risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD).

Investigators observed a significant inverse association between fish/omega-3 fatty acid consumption and major CHD events, particularly death, in a 16-year follow-up of 84,688 women participating in the 1980 Nurses' Health Study.

The inverse association was independent of established cardiovascular risk factors and dietary predictors of CHD, including fibre, trans-fatty acids and the ratio of polyunsaturated to saturated fats as dietary predictors. The association was not explained by differences in the intake of red meat or fruits and vegetables.
