Chemoreduction given to patients with retinoblastoma who otherwise would be candidates for enucleation spared 71% of eyes and sometimes preserved good visual acuity, according to the results of a prospective, nonrandomized trial reported in the December issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology.
“Chemoreduction has become an important therapeutic tool in the management of retinoblastoma,” write Carol L. Shields, MD, and colleagues from the Wills Eye Hospital of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. “However, its usefulness for children with unilateral disease has not been specifically explored.”
