Color vision testing does not appear to be a useful method of detecting digoxin toxicity in elderly patients taking the drug, according to UK investigators. Although color vision disturbances are common in elderly patients with digoxin toxicity, they are also common among such patients with therapeutic drug levels.
Dr. J. G. Lawrenson, from City University in London, and colleagues performed color vision tests and measured serum digoxin levels in 30 hospitalized patients, mean age 81.3 years, on daily digoxin therapy. The researchers’ findings are published in the November issue of the British Journal of Ophthalmology.
