Normal tension glaucoma should be considered to be a neurological disease, possibly linked to nerve compression rather than as a matter of elevated intra-ocular pressure, according to researchers speaking here October 21 at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO).
As such, it is questionable whether or not normal tension glaucoma (NTG) can be treated with drugs, said Dr. Sean Donahue, of the Vanderbilt University Eye Center, in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. Relatively little is known about normal tension glaucoma except that it seems to exert the same effect as glaucoma caused by elevated intra-ocular pressure and depresses, or “cups”, the optic nerve.
However, even though pressure within the globe of the eye can remain substantially the same, and may even be below normal, the damage is being done to the optic nerve head nonetheless.
