Reducing intraocular pressure (IOP) early in glaucoma reduces disease progression, according to the results of a randomized trial with a nontreatment control arm reported in the October issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology. Because IOP and glaucoma are not synonymous, the benefits of intervention had not been confirmed in earlier randomized trials.
“These results strongly support the body of evidence suggesting that immediate treatment of early stage, open-angle glaucoma will slow the disease progression,” Paul Sieving, MD, PhD, says in a news release. He is director of the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health, which cosponsored the study. “Early detection and timely treatment would help to save the vision of thousands of people each year.”
