Valganciclovir for cytomegalovirus retinitis in AIDS patients appears to have the same safety profile as intravenous and oral ganciclovir.
French, American and Canadian researchers in the Roche Valganciclovir Study Group say treatment with valganciclovir — an oral prodrug of ganciclovir — demonstrated no clinical toxicities or laboratory abnormalities that have not been observed with ganciclovir.
In a single-arm, open-label safety study, 212 AIDS patients with treated cytomegalovirus retinitis received 900 mg valganciclovir once daily as maintenance therapy, with courses of twice daily induction therapy as needed to treat progression.
