Australian researchers report in the August issue of the American Journal of Ophthalmology that individuals with brown eyes have an 80% higher risk of cataracts and a 150% higher risk of cataract surgery than their blue-eyed counterparts.
Dr. Paul Mitchell and colleagues at the University of Sydney analyzed data from the Blue Mountains Eye Study, a population-based project that involved 3654 primarily Caucasian individuals 49 years of age or older between 1992 and 1994. Dr. Mitchell’s team evaluated the incidence and severity of cataracts at baseline and after 5 years for the 2335 surviving group members.
The investigators report that individuals with brown iris color had an odds ratio (OR) of 1.8 for nuclear cataracts and an OR of 2.5 for cataract surgery 5 years after the baseline evaluation compared with blue-eyed individuals.
