Long-Term Glaucoma Control Better With Trabeculectomy Than With Canalostomy


NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jul 29 –

 Treatment of open-angle glaucoma with trabeculectomy results in more postoperative cataracts but better long-term control of intraocular pressure (IOP) than does treatment with a newer nonpenetrating procedure, according to the findings of a prospective study reported in the British Journal of Ophthalmology for July.

“Nonpenetrating trabecular surgery, in which Schlemm’s canal was deroofed under a partial thickness scleral flap,” was first described in 1984, UK investigators write. Viscocanalostomy, in which high viscosity sodium hyaluronate is injected into Schlemm’s canal, was described in 1999. Unlike filtering surgery, canalostomy avoids penetration into the anterior chamber and iridectomy.
