Hypoxia during hours of darkness appears to contribute to diabetic retinopathy, suggesting that nighttime illumination might slow development of the condition, British researchers said on Thursday.
Other studies have suggested that increased oxygen demand from rod receptors during dark adaptation, combined with impaired capillary function, is responsible for retinal damage seen in diabetics.
