Low birth weight is an independent risk factor for strabismus, recent study findings indicate. While previous reports have linked the two conditions, it has been unclear if confounding factors may have been responsible for the apparent link.
Researchers say the findings underscore the importance of screening low-birth-weight children for the condition. Children with disorders that affect the brain, such as cerebral palsy, have a higher risk of strabismus, as do babies born with retinopathy of prematurity.
Because such factors are also related to low birth weight, the relative importance of birth weight itself in strabismus has been unclear, according to the authors of the new study.
