Changes in Optic Nerve Head Blood Flow Affect Finger Flood Flow in Patients with Open-Angle Glaucoma

HULL, QUEBEC — June 17, 2002 —

A relationship has been found to exist between finger blood flow and ocular blood flow in patients with open-angle glaucoma, according to a study of 36 patients presented here Saturday.

Speaking here at the annual meeting of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society, Dr. Ahim Hafez, principal investigator and a practitioner at Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, said one of the motivations behind the study was to determine the impact of stimulants like cold or emotional stress on blood flow.

“Certain patients are more susceptible to the effects of cold or emotional stress,” said Dr. Hafez. “They act towards these stimulants by a process known as vasospasm. The smooth muscles of the blood vessels excessively constrict or do not show the capability of dilatation. Less blood flow goes to the tissues, and different tissues suffer from the effect of these tightening. We are looking to see if there is an explanation of what happens in glaucoma is linked to this process.”
