COS: Possible Connection Between Glaucoma And Cortical Involvement

HULL, QC — June 19, 2002 —

There may be cortical involvement in glaucoma which can be measured functionally through depth perception, researchers suggest.

 “There is some experimental research that suggests impairment of depth perception because of glaucoma may involve higher brain centres,” said Nupura Krishnadev, a medical student at the University of Toronto, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, speaking Monday at the annual meeting of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS), in Hull, Quebec, Canada. “Basic scientists have found that there are changes in the cortex with glaucoma.”

Thirty seven patients, aged 40 to 65 years, were enrolled in this study examining possible functional changes linked to the visual cortex. Eighteen patients had glaucoma, 16 were suspected of having glaucoma, and 19 patients acted as controls. Given depth perception changes after age 65, older patients were excluded from the cohort to avoid confounding results.
