Using topical and intracameral anesthesia is an alternative type of anesthesia that can be applied when performing penetrating keratoplasty (PKP), according to research presented here Friday.
Conventional forms of anesthesia, such as retrobulbar injection, have been associated with moderate complications (e.g., retrobulbar hemorrhage) to more severe complications (e.g., corneal perforation and even death), according to Dr. Robert Paul, a member of the department of ophthalmology at University of Toronto and practitioner at Toronto Western Hospital, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Dr. Paul presented the findings at the annual meeting of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS). The complications have prompted surgeons to find alternative methods of anesthesia.
