Without the use of a knife, sclerostomy by enzymatic treatment reduced intraocular pressure and relieved symptoms in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma who participated in a pilot study conducted in India.
After developing a technique they called “enzymatic sclerostomy,” using clostridial collagenase, in rabbits, Dr. Jacob A. Dan, of Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, and colleagues used the method in 15 patients who were legally blind secondary to primary open-angle glaucoma.
