Sleep apnea may play an important pathogenic role in some patients with nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), researchers report in the May Archives of Ophthalmology.
The finding that many patients with NAION have visual loss in the morning has fueled thinking that nocturnal events may predispose patients to the disease, Dr. Thomas R. Hedges III, of the New England Eye Center in Boston, and colleagues explain in the paper.
