Women who carry the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic mutations appear to have a high lifetime risk for developing ovarian cancer, reaching 63% by age 75, according to a study conducted among Ashkenazi Jewish women, presented at the 34th Annual Meeting of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists.
BRCA1 carriers in this study tended to develop ovarian cancer at a younger age than did BRCA2 carriers, according to a study led by Uziel Beller, MD, of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, Israel.
This finding has implications on the decision whether and when to recommend prophylactic oophorectomy in specific patients, he said.
