Patients with unresectable primary or metastatic adrenocortical carcinoma tolerate image-guided, percutaneous radio frequency ablation (RFA) well, report researchers from the United States. RFA is effective for short-term local control of small adrenal tumours and most effective for tumours less than 5 centimetres, they say.
Survival improves with radical excision in selected patients, say the investigators from the US National Institutes of Health Clinical Centre in Bethesda, Maryland. Aggressive local disease control could also influence survival, they add.
The feasibility, safety, imaging appearance and short-term efficacy of image-guided, percutaneous RFA was examined in procedures using 36 treatment spheres on 15 adrenocortical carcinoma tumours in 8 patients over 27 months. Participants had unresectable tumours or were poor surgical candidates; they were followed for a mean of 10.3 months.
