Unlike adults, children with hemophilia are not protected from HIV infection or disease progression by the presence of the CCR5-delta-32 genotype, according to a report in the January 15th issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases.
Persons homozygous for CCR5-delta-32, an allelic variant of the coreceptor CCR5 essential for HIV entry into cells, appear to be highly resistant to HIV-1 infection, the authors explain, but the contribution of this variant to HIV infection and its progression in patients with hemophilia has not been clarified.
