Britain’s Department of Health said on Wednesday it had begun an inquiry into what had happened to millions of pounds intended for cancer services amid fears that some of the cash has been used to pay off health service debts.
The government has launched a major drive to improve cancer services but specialists have complained that little of the 255 million promised in 2001-02 or the 76 million “earmarked” for cancer in 2002-03 has reached the front line. There are concerns that hospitals have in some cases used the money for other purposes, including paying off debts.
