Platinum-based adjuvant chemotherapy improves survival and delays recurrence when administered following surgery for early-stage ovarian cancer, results of two separate phase III clinical trials suggest. The additional treatment benefit was most apparent in patients with undetected residual disease, according to the reports in the January 15 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
In the Adjuvant ChemoTherapy in Ovarian Neoplasm (ACTION) Trial, Dr. J. Baptist Trimbos, of Leiden University Medical Center in Leiden, and collaborators enrolled 448 patients between 1990 and 2000 from 40 centers in nine European countries. A total of 224 were randomly assigned to chemotherapy that included cisplatin or carboplatin, and 224 were assigned to observation only.
