NICE has issued for consultation, preliminary guidance on capecitabine for the treatment of locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer. The guidance recommends that: – Capecitabine in combination with docetaxel is recommended in preference to single-agent docetaxel in people for whom anthracycline-containing regimens are unsuitable or have failed.
In individual circumstances, however, single-agent taxane (docetaxel or paclitaxel) may be considered more suitable. – Capecitabine monotherapy is recommended as an option in those who have not previously received capecitabine in combination therapy, and for whom either anthracycline and taxane-containing regimens have failed or further anthracycline therapy is contraindicated.
