There is no hard evidence that exposure to poliovirus vaccine contaminated with simian virus 40 (SV40) has increased the rate of pleural mesothelioma among the estimated 10 to 30 millions of Americans who received the tainted vaccine in mass immunization programs in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
That’s according to results of a study published in the January 1st issue of The Journal of the National Cancer Institute. SV40 is tumorigenic in rodents and SV40 DNA has been detected in some human tumors, especially pleural mesothelioma, although results are “conflicting,” Dr. Howard D. Strickler of New York’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine and colleagues note in the paper.
