Novel Oral Vaccine May Be Useful Therapy for Cervical Cancer

Oral vaccination of mice with recombinant Listeria monocytogenes expressing a human papillomavirus (HPV) oncogene elicits a specific immune response that prevents or reverses tumor growth, researchers in Taiwan report.

Dr. Show-Li Chen, of the National Defense Medical Center in Taipei, and colleagues constructed recombinant L. monocytogenes expressing E7, a tumor antigen that is consistently expressed in high-grade cervical dysplasias and cancers. A previous murine study had demonstrated the feasibility of this technique, but the vaccine had been administered intraperitoneally.
