Reductions in serum levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) correlate with the development of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with hepatitis C (HCV)-related cirrhosis, according to results of prospective study conducted in Italy.
Measuring IGF-1 levels “may improve the effectiveness and the cost-benefit ratio of surveillance for patients with hepatocarcinoma,” allowing “precocious diagnosis” of liver tumors, Dr. Carlo Carella, of Second University of Naples, and associates suggest in the December 15th issue of Cancer.
