Oral paclitaxel, in combination with oral cyclosporine, is active and safe in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), according to a report in the December 1st Journal of Clinical Oncology.
Intravenous paclitaxel has previously been shown to provide response rates as high as 40% in patients with advanced NSCLC, the authors explain, but treatments using oral paclitaxel have been limited due to its poor oral bioavailability. Coadministration of oral cyclosporine, though, improves the oral bioavailability of paclitaxel by about 8-fold.
