Treatment strategies using letrozole as first-line therapy for advanced breast cancer provide significantly higher quality-adjusted survival than does treatment with tamoxifen.
Study author Beth H. Sherrill, MStat, presented these findings on December 11th at the 25th annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in San Antonio, Texas. “The quality-adjusted time without symptoms or toxicity (Q- TwiST) measure has been used to compare the value of treatment regimens in breast cancer patients,” Ms. Sherrill said.
This measure partitions the survival time of the patient into health states and assigns utility weights to each one, reflecting the fact that therapy may be associated with toxicities that reduce the benefits of increased disease-free survival, she added. “We compared the Q-TwiST of letrazole to tamoxifen using the trade-off between the clinical benefits and toxicities.”
