According to preliminary results from the “once-only sigmoidoscopy” (SCORE) trial, a single sigmoidoscopy screening at about 60 years of age may provide a safe and effective screen for colorectal cancer in patients with average risk.
Reporting in the December 4th issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Nereo Segnan from the Centro per la Prevenzione Oncologica, Turino, Italy, and colleagues present preliminary findings from the SCORE trial.
Questionnaires were sent to 236,568 individuals, 55 to 64 years of age. From the 56,537 who responded, the researchers enrolled 34,292 and 17,148 were assigned to sigmoidoscopy screening. Sigmoidoscopy results were available for 9911 subjects.
