An anti-cancer vaccine generated by adding an HER-2 fusion protein to dendritic cells (DCs) protects mice against HER-2-expressing tumor.
That’s according to a report in the early online edition of the International Journal of Cancer for December. Approximately 25% of metastatic breast, ovarian, pancreatic and colon cancers overexpress HER-2 (also called neu), a transmembrane glycoprotein with tyrosine kinase activity. Scientists at Dendreon Corporation, in Seattle, genetically engineered fusion proteins with portions of extra- and intracellular HER-2 domains, which were then covalently bound to granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF).
