Treatment with a recently developed stent can reduce symptomatic gastric reflux in patients with inoperable esophageal cancer, according to a report published in the November issue of Radiology.
The stent, which is produced by UK-based Wilson Cook Medical under the brand name Dua, has been approved for use in the UK since 2000 and was recently cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration.
Like conventional stents, the Dua consists of an expandable region that bridges the esophageal stricture caused by the tumor. It also has a special polyurethane sleeve that sits in the stomach. The sleeve allows food to pass in an antegrade fashion, but collapses with elevated stomach pressure, thereby preventing retrograde flow of stomach contents.
