The European Medicines Evaluation Agency said on Tuesday that five patients had died of severe anaphylactic reactions to the anticoagulant Refludan (lepirudin), a recombinant version of hirudin.
In a statement, the EMEA said it was aware of seven recent reports of severe anaphylactic reactions in patients receiving Refludan. “In six of these cases, the anaphylactic reaction occurred after re-exposure to Refludan. The patient died in five of these cases.”
