For melanomas less than 2 mm in thickness, extending the excision margins beyond 1 cm does not improve patient survival, according to a report published in the October issue of the Archives of Surgery. For thicker melanomas, optimal excision margins remain to be determined.
Dr. Marko B. Lens, from the University of Oxford in the UK, and colleagues analyzed data from four randomized controlled trials that compared narrow and wide excision margins in the treatment of primary cutaneous melanoma. Data from a total of 2406 patients were included in the analysis.
