Recurrences of nasopharyngeal carcinoma with a high T stage, involvement of the skull base, repeated pre-surgical recurrence, nodal metastasis, and positive surgical margins are associated with a poor prognosis following salvage nasopharyngectomy.
On the other hand, patients with low T stage tumours gain the most from nasopharyngectomy.
Researchers from The Chinese University of Hong Kong Prince of Wales Hospital and Kings College Hospital, London, England, retrospectively reviewed 25 men and six women who underwent salvage nasopharyngectomy for recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Patients’ mean age was 49.5 years, although this ranged from 26 to 69 years.
Twenty-eight patients underwent the procedure to treat their first recurrence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The other three patients underwent nasopharyngectomy for their second recurrence.
