Breast cancer patients in the US fare worse if they come from a low socioeconomic background, regardless of race, although African-American women present with more advanced aggressive disease at a younger age compared with white women, according to the results of a meta-analysis.
“This qualitative meta-analysis supports the idea that race, the color of one’s skin, is merely a surrogate of socioeconomic status as a prognostic factor for survival in breast cancer,” Dr. Chaundr K. Cross told Reuters Health.
