Increased haemoglobin (Hb) and improved quality of life (QoL) can result from treatment with erythropoietin in cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy.
These study findings were described here at the 27th annual meeting of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO).
Dr P Pantelakos of NIMTS, Athens, Greece, described the effects of treatment with human recombinant erythropoietin (EPO) on 179 mildly anaemic patients receiving radiotherapy or chemo-radiotherapy for histologically confirmed malignancy.
The patients, aged between 18 and 70 years, had a baseline Hb of between 9.0 and 11.0g/dL. All received EPO 10,000 IU subcutaneously five days/week from the start of radiotherapy until the end of their course (six to eight weeks). Blood samples were taken weekly for analysis of Hb and haematocrit (Hct). A final assessment was carried out four weeks after the end of treatment.
