High dose chemotherapy with adjuvant peripheral blood progenitor support does not increase the survival or improve relapse rate in node-positive breast cancer patients, according to results of a randomised trial presented here October 21 at the 27th Congress of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO).
Results of early single arm studies supported the idea that high dose chemotherapy plus peripheral blood progenitor was a better option than conventional dose chemotherapy. This new trial, however, seems to dash these hopes.
“There were great expectations for high dose chemotherapy, but evidence from a number of trials shows there are no real benefits that outweigh the side effects or improve the chances of survival,” said Dr. John Crown, Consultant Medical Oncologist at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, in Dublin, Ireland.
