Menopausal women who receive estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) after being successfully treated for localized breast cancer have disease-free survival rates comparable to their counterparts who do not receive ERT, researchers report in the November 1st issue of Cancer.
ERT did not compromise breast cancer-free survival, lead author Dr. Rena Vassilopoulou-Sellin told Reuters Health. She added that women with known estrogen-receptor-positive tumors were not included in the study, and “unlike the controversial Women’s Health Initiative study, we used estrogen alone.”
