The clustering of gastric cancer in families may, in part, be explained by intrafamilial aggregation of Helicobacter pylori infection, according to a report published in the October 10th issue of the International Journal of Cancer.
Dr. Young-Woon Chang, from Kyung Hee University College of Medicine in Seoul, Korea, and colleagues tested 300 relatives of gastric cancer patients and 426 control subjects for infection with H. pylori. In addition, both groups were tested for serum antibodies to CagA and VacA, markers of H. pylori virulence.
