Results of a retrospective study of patients undergoing orthopaedic reductions in a hospital emergency department suggest that it is safe to add parenteral opiate pre-medication to methohexital for moderate sedation, and that this addition does not affect the complication or procedural success rates.
The research was presented here at the annual meeting of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). Ted Chan, MD, medical director of the Metropolitan Medical Strike Team, University of California, I San Diego, California, and colleagues reviewed cases from an existing emergency department database to identify patients who underwent moderate procedural sedation with methohexital for orthopaedic reductions.
