When used in combination with paclitaxel, cisplatin appears to be more effective for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) than carboplatin, a newer agent derived from cisplatin, according to a recent report.
Although both agents have been in clinical use for more than two decades, the current study represents the first randomized trial to directly compare the drugs in patients with advanced NSCLC, lead author Dr. Rafael Rosell, from the Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol in Barcelona, Spain, and colleagues note.
The study involved 618 patients with advanced NSCLC who were randomized to receive paclitaxel in combination with cisplatin or carboplatin. The researchers’ findings are published in the October issue of the Annals of Oncology.
