NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Sept 26 –
Even after controlling for factors such as disease severity and admission hemoglobin level, blood transfusion is associated with increased mortality in intensive care unit (ICU) settings, according to a recent report. The findings also indicate that anemia and blood transfusions are a common occurrence in such settings.
Dr. Jean Louis Vincent, from Erasme University Hospital in Brussels, Belgium, and colleagues conducted one study to determine the effects of blood draws in ICU settings and another to determine the occurrence and effect of anemia and blood transfusions in such settings.
