Lung cancer will kill more Swedish women than men within the next five years, and within eight years, it will replace breast cancer as the leading cause of cancer deaths among women here. Sweden may become the first country to have such a dubious distinction, announced Dr. Kjell Larsson at the 12th annual meeting of the European Respiratory Society.
Dr. Larsson is the Chair of the ERS Congress and a professor of occupational lung diseases at the Institute of Environmental Medicine, at the Karolinska Institute here. Citing Swedish national health statistics, Dr. Larsson said approximately 20 percent of Swedes now smoke, but whereas the number of men who smoke has fallen to around 16 percent since 1980, 21 percent of Swedish women still smoke.
