Hormone Replacement Therapy May Increase Circulating Activated Blood Platelets, Raising Risk for Cardiovascular Morbidity in Postmenopausal Women

The risk for thrombosis may be increased by short-term treatment with oestradiol or combined hormone replacement therapy. According to research from the Netherlands, it increases the amount of circulating activated platelets, as measured by flow cytometry.

 Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is recognised as a possible risk factor for cardiovascular incidents under certain circumstances in postmenopausal women. Researchers at the VU Academic Medical Centre, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, questioned the possibility that part of this may be due to the influence of short-term HRT on blood platelets.

 They therefore questioned whether short term unopposed oestradiol or sequentially combined oestradiol and either trimegestone or dydrogesterone may affect platelet activation parameters in healthy postmenopausal women. In a prospective, randomised, placebo-controlled 12-week study, 60 healthy, normotensive, post-menopausal women who had not undergone hysterectomy were assigned to receive HRT.
