Sensitivity of breast proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy [(1)H MRS] for detecting breast cancer is 83 percent and a specificity of 85 percent, United States researchers report.
Both values could be as high as 92 percent after technical exclusions, the researchers say. They found factors limiting the sensitivity of the examination were mainly technical. Lesions
presenting as a detectable composite choline signal in the corresponding (1)H MR spectra were diagnosed as malignant.
Lesions with no choline signal were diagnosed as benign, the researchers explain. Investigators from Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, also say sensitivity and specificity approach 100 percent in younger women. They define younger as 40 years of age and less.
